a step towards better tomorrow

The Sopan Centre of Be and Make – Be the Change and Make the Change is alive with excitement as students gather from Monday to Saturday to improve their Bengali, English, and Math skills. By age 13, they aim to read newspapers in both languages, write letters, and perform basic math. Saturdays are dedicated to creative activities like play, drawing, and acting. Last December, many students ranked high on the school merit list, showcasing their dedication. With 30-35 students per center, and some holding 40-45, Sopan Centres provide education to children whose parents are often illiterate and unable to afford tuition. The centers are a foundation for a brighter future, and there are plans to expand to more remote villages.

Samita Karmakar, 57, struggled financially, earning ₹3,500 a month from domestic work, barely covering her expenses. The COVID-19 pandemic left her jobless and without savings. Meeting Be and Make transformed her life. She learned about saving, opened a bank account, and started receiving her ₹1,000 widow pension monthly. Be and Make also helped her obtain a PAN card, allowing her to invest. Now, Samita feels secure and plans for her future. Her journey from struggle to hope, marked by a broad smile as she reassures her grandson, "Now I can sleep peacefully at night," highlights her resilience and the crucial support from Be and Make.

Students come together in conversation after a Maryada Project session, part of our menstrual health and hygiene training. These sessions encourage open dialogue, breaking down barriers and myths around menstruation. By providing essential knowledge, we empower young girls to confidently take charge of their health. The Maryada Project aims to create a supportive environment where every girl feels informed and respected, paving the way for a healthier future.
