RURAL PUBLIC HEALTH

"Be the Change and Make the Change believes that access to healthcare is a basic human right. We are working to ensure that rural communities in India have access to high-quality healthcare services. Despite significant progress in recent years, the challenges facing rural healthcare in India remain significant. In this blog post, we will discuss the current state of rural public health in India, the challenges facing rural communities, and the solutions we are working on to improve rural healthcare in the country. " The Current State of Rural Public Health in India: Rural communities in India face a range of challenges when it comes to accessing healthcare services. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), only 40% of rural households have access to healthcare services within a 5-kilometer radius. This means that many rural residents have to travel long distances to receive medical care, which can be especially challenging for individuals who lack access to transportation. Additionally, the number of healthcare providers in rural areas is significantly lower than in urban areas, with only one doctor per 10,189 people in rural areas compared to one doctor per 1,457 people in urban areas. Challenges in Rural Healthcare in India: Rural healthcare in India faces several challenges, including a shortage of healthcare providers, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and limited financial resources. Many rural medical facilities lack basic infrastructure, such as electricity, running water, and medical equipment. This can make it difficult for healthcare providers to provide high-quality medical care, which can result in poor health outcomes for rural residents. Solutions to Improve Rural Healthcare in India: At our NGO, we believe that improving rural healthcare in India requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses the unique challenges facing rural communities. Some of the potential solutions we are working on include: Increasing the number of healthcare providers in rural areas: We are partnering with medical schools and hospitals to offer incentives to healthcare providers who practice in rural areas, as well as providing support for medical students who are interested in rural healthcare. By increasing the number of healthcare providers in rural areas, we can ensure that rural residents have access to medical care when needed. Improving access to medical facilities: We are working with local governments to increase funding for rural hospitals and clinics, as well as building new medical facilities in areas where they are needed most. We are also working to improve the quality of existing medical facilities, ensuring that they have the infrastructure and equipment necessary to provide high-quality medical care. Addressing financial barriers: We are working with government agencies and other NGOs to expand access to health insurance and provide subsidies for medical care for low-income individuals. By reducing financial barriers to healthcare, we can ensure that everyone has access to the medical care they need, regardless of their financial situation. Addressing social determinants of health: We are partnering with local communities and school institutions to spread awareness on affordable food options and safe places to exercise, as well as working to reduce tobacco use in rural communities. By addressing social determinants of health, we can prevent the onset of many chronic diseases and improve overall health outcomes in rural communities. Improving transportation infrastructure: We are advocating for expanded public transportation options in rural areas, as well as working with local governments to provide transportation services for individuals who need to access medical care. By improving transportation infrastructure, we can ensure that rural residents can access medical care without having to travel long distances or rely on expensive private transportation. Increasing public awareness: Along with communities and schools, our frontline workers educate rural communities about the importance of preventive healthcare and disease management. By increasing public awareness about healthcare, we can encourage rural residents to take an active role in their own health and well-being.

Conclusion: We believe that everyone has the right to access high-quality healthcare services, regardless of where they live. Rural public health in India faces significant challenges. Still, with a multi-faceted approach that addresses the unique needs of rural communities, we can improve access to healthcare services and improve health outcomes for rural residents. Be and Make is committed to working with local communities, governments, and other organizations to ensure everyone has access to the healthcare services they need. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of millions of people living in rural India. contributed by Ivaan Kundu, volunteer, West Bengal
